Allentown resident Ed Ryan has been selected by AARP, the nonprofit membership organization for people 50 and over, to receive Pennsylvania's 2007 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service, the Association's most prestigious and visible volunteer award.

AARP Pennsylvania chose Ryan for his service to the association and how he impacts the lives of others in the community. Ryan has served as an AARP volunteer for more than 15 years and previously worked on the state legislative and long-term care task forces. Currently, he is an appointed AARP volunteer to the United Nations and was co-chairman of the UN's International Day of Older Persons last October. Earlier in 2007, Ryan was recognized as an unsung hero in his community by the Lehigh County Office of Aging and Adult Services.

Named for AARP founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, the award recognizes members and volunteers who significantly enhance the lives of individuals 50 and over and inspire others to volunteer. The Andrus Award was created in 2002 and each year honors one individual from each state, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

"This award acts as a symbol to members and the public that we can all work together for positive social change," said AARP Pennsylvania State Director Dick Chevrefils. "AARP has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and the important contributions our volunteers make to their communities, neighbors, and the programs they serve."

The Andrus award was formally presented to Ryan at AARP Pennsylvania's 20th anniversary celebration in Harrisburg.
