AARP West Virginia, the AARP Foundation and numerous volunteers collected nearly 3,000 pounds of old tax returns, credit card bills and bank statements from Charleston-area residents on the Day of Service.
The staff and volunteers gathered under a major highway overpass—where Interstates 64 and 77 converge near downtown Charleston—for "Fight Fraud—Shred Instead," an identity theft prevention event.
A document destruction company was on-site with a large truck that chewed up the documents. D&M Document Services Inc.of Sophia, WV, will recycle the paper, which will become toilet paper and corrugated boxes.
The public was invited to bring their documents to the site, which is well-known by Charleston residents because it is where the city refuse department distributes free trash bags to homeowners each year.
Consumers did not have to leave their cars, as staff and volunteers set up a "drive-though lane" to collect the boxes, bags and even suitcases full of documents containing personal information.
A popular local radio station produced a live broadcast from the site. The event was covered by both daily newspapers and four television networks.
