The AARP Andrus Award for Community Service recognizes outstanding AARP volunteers and members in every state who are making a powerful difference in their communities, in ways that inspire others to serve and that are consistent with AARP's mission, vision and commitment to community service.
"This award acts as a symbol to members and the public that we can all work together for positive social change," says AARP West Virginia State Director, Frank Bellinetti. "AARP has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and the important contributions AARP volunteers make to their communities, neighbors and the programs they serve."
The West Virginia state winner was formally announced and the award was presented at the organization's Volunteer Recognition Dinner, Nov. 30 at the Charleston Marriott Town Center.
Sylvia Watkins, a retired U.S. Air Force officer, was selected by AARP West Virginia for her remarkable service and for the impact she has had on the lives of others in her community. Watkins' record of achievement, service and commitment to her family, church, neighborhood and town provides an extraordinary example of the difference that volunteerism can make in the lives of individuals and in the well being and vitality of a community.
"The most unusual characteristic about Sylvia's volunteer work is the variety, magnitude and lasting impact she has had on all segments of her community," Bellinetti said. "Not only does she do the 'hands-on" service, but as an effective advocate, she also helps bring about long-term changes in public policy."
Watkins, a Registered Nurse, volunteers for the AARP Foundation's ElderWatch and West Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol Project programs. She also serves on AARP West Virginia's Health and Wellness Task Force and the Advocacy Team. Additionally, she represents AARP with various community organizations, including the Alzheimer's Association.
Watkins leads by example and works along side the people she recruits, which is consistent with AARP's mission, vision and strategic direction. This quiet, steady role model is a motivating force for others to join her in her activities.
"Sylvia impresses everyone that comes in contact with her with her outstanding work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to AARP's agenda," Bellinetti said.
