AARP West Virginia Offers Free Credit Reports at Logan Consumer University

Scam artists beware! AARP West Virginia and several agencies are teaming up to help West Virginia seniors learn how to resist scams at a "Scam Jam" in Logan on Nov. 7.
Consumers will be able to obtain free copies of the credit reports - and will be armed with information about how to read them and how to correct errors at the AARP Consumer University "Scam Jam" in Logan on Nov. 7. The Consumer University session will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Chief Logan Lodge and Conference Center.
Consumer University is a one-day educational forum focusing on identity theft, investment fraud and charitable giving. Presenters include West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw, West Virginia State Auditor Glen Gainer and Secretary of State Betty Ireland, as well as representatives of the U.S. Social Security Administration and the AARP Foundation.
The Internet Crime Complaint Center will participate in Consumer University along with several other organizations with information important to consumers age 50+. The Internet Crime Complaint Center (known as IC3) is a joint partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) located in Fairmont, WV. The center receives complaints from victims of Internet crimes from all over the world. These complaints refer to law enforcement that has jurisdiction in the area where the crime occurred. One of the special outreach projects of the IC3 is consumer awareness Web site. Representatives of IC3 will be on hand at Consumer University to demonstrate the Web site, distribute educational material and talk with consumers.
