AARP Volunteer Tells World War II Story on NJN Television

NJN Project Collects the Stories of the Greatest Generation

An exciting new project at NJN Public Television and Radio is collecting the stories of New Jerseyans who fought in or were impacted by the Second World War.

AARP Volunteer Charles Nolley will be featured on Another View: A Soldier's Story. Nolley was a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, the African American pilots who became legendary for their flying ability. A Soldier's Story will air Oct. 16 at 6:30pm, and again Oct. 19 at 11:30pm.

"We must capture these stories now for today's young citizens and for future generations to understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by individuals, families, and communities at a turning point in our history," said Elizabeth G. Christopherson, Executive Director of NJN. To that end, NJN launched the NJN WWII Local Projects Initiative.

The project was launched in conjunction with Ken Burns' new seven-part documentary The War, which will air Thursdays at 8pm on NJN Public Television beginning Oct. 6. The series "explores the history and horror of the Second World War from an American perspective by following the fortunes of so-called ordinary men and women who get caught up in the greatest cataclysm in human history."

NJN is collecting World War II stories from those who lived through the war, at home or abroad. Anyone can share his or her story, memorabilia and photos online. The materials will be used in classrooms and for community outreach across the state.

"With over 1,000 World War II veterans nationwide dying every day, there is a sense of urgency that we research and record the World War II experiences of America's greatest generation now," said Jill Hargrave of NJN.

Senator Frank Lautenberg, a World War II veteran, is serving as honorary chair of the project, beginning with a luncheon at the War Memorial in Trenton.
