Andrus Awards for Community Service

Each year, AARP presents its Andrus Award for Community Service. In 2007, AARP recognized 53 unique individuals with its prestigious and visible award. All winners had demonstrated “the power to make it better” in their communities in ways consistent with AARP's mission, vision, and commitment to volunteer service. All awardees have inspired people to volunteer.

The AARP Andrus Award

The award, named in honor of the AARP founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, is presented to distinguished individuals for significant contributions to society.

Ethel Percy Andrus Legacy Award for Innovation

In honor of AARP's founder and its 50th anniversary in 2008, AARP created the Ethel Percy Andrus Legacy Award for Innovation. AARP’s anniversary committee awarded a $10,000 prize to one public secondary school (grades 8–12) in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Public high-school principals submitted brief descriptions of programs or practices that have enhanced student achievement or improved the environment for the students, the schools, or the communities served by the schools. The awards recognized innovative programs or practices currently operating in schools. AARP announced the winning schools on February 7, 2008.

Ethel Percy Andrus Legacy Awards

In honor of Dr. Andrus’ career and service to public education, and to recognize her nearly 30–year career as principal of Lincoln High School in Los Angeles, AARP’s 50th anniversary committee presented the $100,000 Ethel Percy Andrus Legacy Awards to six high schools across the country.

The prizes went to public high schools (grades 8–12) in cities AARP selected as focal points for our 50th anniversary celebration. Those cities included Chicago, Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Learn more about this $100,000 Legacy award.
