Dear AARP Member,

AARP, one of the largest non-profit and non-partisan membership associations in the country, seeks candidates to fill seven volunteer positions on its Board of Directors. These positions are for six-year terms beginning in May 2010. The Board of Directors is responsible for setting AARP policies and overseeing a multi-million dollar budget that supports benefits, services and activities for over 40 million members and others 50-plus. Directors are expected to spend at least 45 days a year on Board business. All travel and subsistence expenses related to AARP activities will be reimbursed by the Association. Please click on the picture of AARP President Jennie Chin Hansen on this page for a special message about the Nomination Process.

The Board governs on behalf of the members and assures appropriate organizational performance, which includes fulfilling the mission of the organization, determining its future direction, and assuring the organization’s fiscal health. The Board meets four times per year, generally in Washington, DC. Board members also are expected to serve on one or two advisory groups, attend an annual retreat, and participate in one national conference, as well as other activities as determined.

Board candidates must have a strong commitment to AARP’s objectives, values and strategic direction. They should be generalists who have a blend of knowledge, skills and relevant experiences in such areas as, public policy, membership development, business, finance, social service, marketing, volunteerism, web and new communications technology.

The AARP National Nominating Committee is inviting individuals who meet the above qualifications to apply from May 1 – September 15, 2009. All candidates will be evaluated by the Committee and the selected finalists will be interviewed in January 2010. The final slate will be presented to the Board for election in February 2010.
