Maeona (Mae) Mendelson, Ph.D., of Kailua, HI, is a member of the AARP Board of Directors, Class of 2012. During the 2008-2010 biennium, she serves as a member of the Board Member Value-Social Impact Committee, and as chair of the National Nominating and National Policy Council Nominating Committees. She also serves on the board of managers of the AARP Global Network. She previously served on the Board Governance Committee and the National Nominating Committee.
Dr. Mendelson is President of Travel & Learn, an intergenerational study tour company. She is also a Professor in Residence at Chaminade University of Honolulu to develop The Intergenerational Center. Mae is the former Executive Director of the Hawaii Intergenerational Network and adjunct professor at Hawaii Pacific University where she taught program design for the human services and intergenerational studies. She was also a program director for the Hawaii Community Services Council and director of development and public relations for the YWCA.
Prior to election to the Board, Dr. Mendelson was AARP Hawaii State President. Her other volunteer experience includes membership on the International Advisory Committee for World Congress of Youth, the United National Association of Hawaii, and the International Consortium of Intergenerational Practice. Dr. Mendelson also is Hawaii coordinator for Sister Cities International and a council member of the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
Dr. Mendelson was named a Purpose Prize Fellow by Civic Ventures and recognized as Social Worker of the Year in Gerontology by the NASW Hawaii in 2007. Her other honors include an award from the Kingdom of Morocco for strengthening the cooperative relationship between the Kingdom of Morocco and Hawaii; a resolution commending contributions to international affairs, culture, education, and trade on behalf of Hawaii; and a commendation for leadership of the Millennium Young People's Congress (MYPC) from the Honolulu Department of Economic Development.
