Charles E. Reed, of Olympia, WA, is a member of the AARP Board of Directors, Class of 2014. He currently serves on the Board Governance Committee, the CEO Evaluation Committee, and the National Policy Council Nominating Committee.
Mr. Reed is a long-term care consultant for his firm, C.E. Reed and Associates. Previously, he was deputy secretary of Washington State's Department of Social and Health Services; assistant secretary of Washington's Administration of Aging and Adult Services; and director of the State's Bureau of Aging and Adult Services. Additional professional experience includes director of the Washington State Office on Aging, program manager at the Utah State Mental Hospital, and case worker for the St. Louis City Welfare Program.
Before being elected to the Board, Mr. Reed chaired the AARP National Policy Council's Health and Long-Term Care Committee. He also chairs the Washington State Home Care Quality Authority. His volunteer experience includes chair of the Long-Term Care Committee of the National Academy for State Health Policy; and president of the National Association of State Units on Aging.
In recognition of Mr. Reed, the Washington State Aging and Disability Administration named a building in his honor. He was recognized as Outstanding Senior Manager by the Governor; received the Dick Ladd Award from the Jessie F. Richardson Foundation; and honored for State Leadership in Aging by the National Association of State Units on Aging. Mr. Reed earned his B.A. in sociology from Brigham Young University.
