T. "Byron" Thames, M.D., of Orlando, FL, is a member of the AARP Board of Directors, Class of 2010. During the 2008-2010 biennium, he serves on the Board Member Value-Social Impact Committee and as a member of the AARP Financial and AARP Services, Inc., Boards. During the 2006-2008 biennium, he served as chair of the AARP Insurance Trust and as a member of the Board Membership Committee and the Governance Review Committee. Dr. Thames also served previously as a member of the Board Governance Committee, the Board Audit and Finance Committee, the AARP Services, Inc. (ASI) Board, and AARP’s National Policy Council (formerly the National Legislative Council).
Among numerous other volunteer activities in the state of Florida, Dr. Thames is a consultant/speaker on medical issues for the Area Agency on Aging for Central Florida, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), and the Senior Resource Alliance. He also is the medical provider for the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) Medical Mobile Clinic for the Elderly, and medical volunteer for the Grace Covenant Church Homeless Program. Dr. Thames previously chaired the Florida Coalition for Patient Safety and the executive committee for the Central Florida AIDS Planning Coalition. He was a member of the Florida Geriatric Medical Education Task Force and board member of several organizations, including Goodwill Industries and Meals on Wheels of Central Florida.
Dr. Thames presently is employed as medical director of Florida Hospital Human Resources, the Darden Employee Clinic, and COMPNET, a managed care organization for occupational medicine. He also is a medical consultant to two quality analysis health care systems and previously was chief medical consultant to numerous corporations including Walt Disney World and SeaWorld.
Dr. Thames held officer positions on numerous boards including the Florida Academy of Family Physicians and Florida Medical Association. He also served on the boards of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Orlando Regional Medical Center, and the Florida Physicians Insurance Reciprocal.
Among Dr. Thames honors are the Art of Medicine Award from the Florida Academy of Family Physicians, the Florida Family Physician of the Year Award, and two Distinguished Service Awards. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Medical Alumni Award from Duke University.
