Allen Douma, MD, of Ashland, OR, is a member of the AARP Board of Directors, Class of 2014. During the 2008-2010 biennium he serves on the Board Audit and Finance Committee and the National Policy Council.
Dr. Douma is chief executive officer of Empower, LLC. Previously, he served as assistant director of the Oregon Department of Human Services; chief executive officer of Health Responsibility Systems; medical director for Hartford and Travelers Insurance Companies, and director of Health Education for the American Medical Association.
Before being elected to the Board, Dr. Douma was a member of the Oregon Executive Council for AARP. His current volunteer activities also include being a board member for the Southern Oregon University Advisory Board and the Oregon Healthcare Quality Corporation.
Among his recognitions, he received gubernatorial appointments to the State's Health Policy Commission and Health Council. America Online also honored him with a 'Best in Breed' award. He was also a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar.
Dr. Douma received his Ph.D. in medicine from the Medical College of Virginia; his BA in engineering science from Johns Hopkins University; and completed a fellowship in communications and economics at George Washington University.
