AARP Foundation congratulates the 2013 winners of the MetLife Foundation Awards for Excellence in Affordable Housing. The awards recognize organizations that are providing affordable housing for low-income older adults along with health care and other social services, all within a “green” building approach.
The 2013 winners, each of which receives a $50,000 grant to expand their work in affordable housing, are:
- REACH Community Development, Walnut Park Apartments (Portland, OR)
- Presbyterian Senior Living, Presbyterian Apartments (Harrisburg, PA)
- Christian Church Homes of Northern California, Sierra Meadows (Visalia, CA)
- Mercy Housing Lakefront and Neighborhood Housing Services, Roseland Place Senior Apartments (Chicago)
Currently, a large population of low-income older adults faces the daunting challenge of finding affordable housing that can accommodate their changing needs as they grow older — needs that include health care and other services. For many, deteriorating physical and cognitive functioning may impede their ability to live independently in the community. With the rapid aging of the population, these challenges are only expected to grow in the future. By providing models of service-oriented housing that can be replicated, the MetLife Foundation Award winners are helping to point the way toward solutions.
