Out of the Shadows:
AARP Foundation Makes a Real Difference in People's Lives

AARP Foundation

Working to create a country free of poverty, where no older person feels vulnerable.

Who we are:

AARP Foundation is AARP's charity -- the heart of AARP. We are the leading charitable organization focused on helping low-income, vulnerable older people remain independent and live a better life.

Today, one in four seniors in the U.S. struggles with poverty and the impossible choices it brings, between taking their medication or putting food on the table, or paying the heating bill or the mortgage.

AARP Foundation creates solutions that help vulnerable older people get their everyday essentials:  food, housing, income and personal connections.

Working to keep struggling seniors from falling further into poverty, AARP Foundation embodies the spirit of service and giving back that is the touchstone of AARP.

What we do:

Working with local community groups across the country, our corporate partners and AARP itself, the Foundation brings together the resources that help struggling seniors meet their everyday needs, bringing them hope and making their life better.

One in four older people struggle with poverty in the U.S. today.  They are not at fault.  Most were independent and self-sufficient once. Now they've lost their jobs, seen their retirement savings disappear and watched the value of their homes plummet overnight.

AARP Foundation creates solutions that help vulnerable older people get their everyday essentials:  food, housing, income and personal connections.

Many are not receiving these essentials now:

  • In the U.S., an appalling 6 million older people face hunger every day.  No one, no matter what their age, should go hungry in our country today. AARP Foundation's and AARP's anti-hunger campaign (hunger web site) is working to change this, through corporate partnerships like Drive to End Hunger (web site), support of community anti-hunger campaigns, and research.
  • Adequate housing is severely limited for low-income people age 50+, and more than 10 million cannot afford their housing costs.
  • The financial resources of more than 33 million struggling seniors are so low that they  risk not being able to meet one or more of their basic needs. Through our income programs like AARP Foundation WorkSearch, AARP Tax-Aide, AARP Foundation Money Management and our Women's Scholarship Program, we help keep older people from falling into poverty.
  • As people age, isolation is a major cause of decline in physical, mental and emotional well-being. If not checked, isolation inevitably leads to loss of independence.

Working to keep struggling seniors from falling further into poverty, AARP Foundation embodies the spirit of service and giving back that is the touchstone of AARP.
