Isolation Grants

Combating Isolation

— © AE Pictures Inc.

AARP Foundation is working to win back opportunity for struggling Americans 50-plus by being a force for change on the most serious issues they face today: housing, hunger, income and isolation. By coordinating responses to these issues on all four fronts at once, and supporting them with vigorous legal advocacy, the Foundation serves the unique needs of those 50-plus while working with local organizations nationwide to reach more people, work more efficiently and make resources go further. AARP Foundation is a charitable affiliate of AARP.

Isolation and AARP Foundation’s Objectives

By definition, people who are isolated can’t easily reach out and say they need some help.  To help them, we need to find out more about them.  Right now, no other organization is taking a comprehensive look at isolation and how it affects an individual’s entire well-being.  So we’re stepping up.  AARP Foundation is pioneering a research project to help us really understand how people get onto a pathway to isolation.  We want to get a better picture of who they are and how they got to the circumstances they’re in.  Using this research as a starting point, AARP Foundation will look at all the ways we can strengthen or repair the broken connections that lead to isolation.  Our work on isolation will focus particularly on the needs of caregivers, the disabled, surviving spouses and other at-risk groups.

Information Requested

AARP Foundation is issuing this Request for Information (RFI) in connection with our work on Isolation and low-income adults age 50 and older. The goal of the RFI is to help AARP Foundation learn what other organizations across the country are doing to help older Americans have the level of contact with others and involvement in community that supports healthy, engaged living. The results from this program will be used to shape AARP Foundation’s grant making efforts around Isolation and low-income adults age 50 and older.
